CG Ryche's self produced 2006
release, X,
is a compilation of arrangements that CG had produced
for various group efforts, TV and movie soundtracks.
Being primarily a drummer and percussionist, CG's compositions on this
CD tend to have highly developed rhythms that draw the
focus of the listener. CG demonstrates a masterful aptitude
for developing interesting rhythms with world music beats,
as well as integrating these within the many styles of
mainstream-flavored instrumental music that appear on this CD.
Ryche employs a number of interesting and unusual percussive
instruments on the CD that make the CD a unique listener experience.
Besides the more common drums from mainstream music,
quintas, congos, tumba, bongos, and timpales from Latin and Afro-Cuban music,
and the less common
African djembe, CG integrates a number of other more obscure
percussive instruments including repenique,
taiko drum, hammer pads, tambourines, symphonic gong,
cajon / bajo, and juggling pandeiro, among others.
This unusual and diverse collection of percussive equipment
gathered from around the globe,
driven by the relentless, studius nature of CG Ryche has
enabled him to integrate different rhythmic stylings
and sounds into his approach in a coherent manner.
The wide diversity and variation in percussive equipment
also enables CG to produce a very distinctive and atypical
sound in his productions.
CG first gain national attention as the rhytmic backbone
of the Benise phenomenon that swept the country's
instrumental scene in 2006, making appearances on
PBS and at many of the major stage venues across the USA.
CG's highly developed African, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian,
Latin, and other world rhythms provided a dimension
to the Benise sound that served as a foundation
for Roni Benise's talented Flamenco fashioned guitar work and
Jim Sitterly's amazing gypsy violin.
The X album demonstrates Ryche's talents beyond
the Benise collaboration by showcasing
his skills in production, arrangement,
and orchestration, as well as providing a
larger sampling of the world rhythms he claims mastery.
The X album serves as a great example
of the integration of world rhythms to
add depth and character to the wide variety of
instrumentally-oriented musical styles that
are explored on this album. The world beats
add a key dimension to the musical soundscape that becomes noticeably
absent from other similar efforts by comparison.
CG reminds us all on this album that rhythm
is the heart (beat) of all music.
After listening to the rhythmic stylings and permutations
on this album, the listener will deem anything
else less rhythmically developed as measured, weighed, and found lacking
relative to CG's demonstrative efforts on his production X.
